This how to guide contains many images or  "screen captures" of a demonstration course from this website.  While the content may differ from your course. The menus, layouts  and functions discussed are the same.

Once logged into the website as a student you will see the course menu in the left-hand column of the page.  This menu allows you to access all course materials, tools and functions.  The image below provides more information about the contents of the Course Menu.






Student Desktop

The Student Desktop is the  landing page when students log into this website. The student Desktop is where you will come to view your assignment status in the course as well as to contact your classmates and instructors. You may alsop edit your contact information here.


How to submit an Assingment


Assignments are given on page for the current week along with other course materials for the week. Look for the Submit Assignment Link on the page. You may also submit your assignment from your student desktop Assignments list.


Using the Web Editor for Assingments

We have given you an online text editor to use when submitting your assignments. You may complete your  work in your favorite word processor or you may use the web text editor to *compose your assignments.  *We recommend you save a local copy of your assingments. You may edit your submitted assignments until they are graded, at which time they will be locked. Each time you edit your assignment, the "date submitted" is changed to reflect the time of the edit.



Copying and Pasting form a Word Processor

Note that when copying and pasting text, the use of a "right click" paste (on Windows systems) may cause you to see a security restriction notice top display. If this happens. Use  the "Paste" buttons included in the Web Editor's Menu or use the Ctrl+V function to paste. The Web Editor also has features to clean up content made by MS Word. You may choose to accept or decline this option based on the resulting appearance.  Remember,  you may edit this assignment online until you are satisfied with the appearance.

*note that if you want to know what a particular icon in the web editor does, just hold your mouse over it and its title will appear. e.g.  mousing over the B will display that it is the "Bold" tool. 

As with any web forms... nothing is saved to the server unitl you click the "Submit Assignment" Button. Make sure that once you are done entering or editing your assignment that you always click the submit button.



The Assignments Forum

The Assignments area of the Student Forum is where your submitted work is stored and displayed for both review and grading by your instructors as well as comment and critiques by your peers.  When you click on an assignment link in the green Assignments Menu you will see all assignments that have been submitted by yourself and your classmates. After each assignment you will see a link to add your comment. Clicking this link will take you to a form where your comments can be entered.  The image below is how an assignment looks when viewed from the Assignments Forum.



Student Forums Menu

The Student Forum is the location for both the Submitted Assignments as well as Open Topics that are started by fellow students or the instructors. Bleow is a screen capture of  sample forum menus.



Open Forum Topics

This is a sample of  one  topic listing in the Open Forum. In this example the Topic is "How to Use the Open Forum" . There are three posts on this topic. The name of the poster and the time of submission are on the left. To Reply to this topic you may click on any of the "REPLY TO TOPCI" links on the page



Class Directory

The image below shows your Class Directory.  If you wish send a private message to an instructor or classmate then just click the mail icon.
Instructors and support staff  also have additional contact information available by clicking the magnifying glass.

Note the Menu to reach your Class directory is in the upper right hand of your Student Desktop. The link for Classmates is circled in red.
*Note the other links in this menus include the ability to cahnge your password, contact information and view and send private messages.
