The 38th Annual International Conference on Critical Thinking

February 22, 2018
Dear Friends and Colleagues in Critical Thinking,

The  38th Annual international Conference on Critical Thinking is fast approaching, and we need you to be an essential part of the learning community at this year's conference . I have never missed a conference since I began learning critical thinking in 1994, and would not miss this rare learning opportunity where people come together to study a robust conception of critical thinking and thereafter create change within their circles of influence.  People attend our conference from every primary and many specialized academic disciplines, and from other backgrounds of all kinds: public service, the professions, and so forth. We invite people from every walk of personal and professional life, from every country in the world, to join us this year.

We often fail to appreciate how fortunate we are in the United States to be able to freely travel and meet together in conference, to openly explore and develop scholarship in critical thinking. Many people from around the globe contact us each year, telling us that they would dearly love to attend our conference, but that they cannot get the requisite visa from our embassies to attend. These scholars are denied travel to join us, even when we send multiple letters to U.S. embassies supporting their attendance. In fact, we have been told by one embassy that our letters of support only "make matters worse." Many of the affected scholars have been approved for Concurrent Sessions and Roundtable Discussions, but we will never know what they had to say, nor how they might have contributed to our own development and intellectual growth.

It is a very sad day in human history when intellectuals and scholars are barred from traveling, with freedom and dignity, to meet and confer with one another - for these scholars and their thinking are essential to the realization of fairminded critical societies across the world. But this is the world we humans have collectively created; indeed, it is a melancholy song sung throughout history. It seems we humans may be incapable of grasping the vital lessons we should be learning by studying historical patterns and trends.

It is only through our critical reasoning, coupled with a strong ethical orientation, that we can hope to turn things around. So we hope that those of you who can make it to our conference will join us this year.  Next year we will be overseas for our annual conference, so do not miss this year's opportunity to be part of this rare chance to learn with the world's leading authorities on critical thinking.

See new information that has been posted on the conference in the upper-left column of this newsletter (not of the website itself): plan your flight with the Daily Schedule, learn about the hotel venue, see the most frequently-asked questions, and more.

Finally, stay tuned for even more updates, including this year's Concurrent Sessions and the formal Program and Proceedings of the 38th Annual International Conference .

Dr. Linda Elder, Senior Fellow and President

From the Conference Archives...

We thought you might enjoy this excerpt from the program and proceedings of our 1985 international conference. It appeared in a short article titled, 'History of the Conference.' Though in some ways the world was a very different place 33 years ago, these words - written by the late Richard Paul, our founder - could well have been written today:

There is every reason to think that the need for an annual conference in critical thinking will continue indefinitely. The deeply entrenched compartmentalization of knowledge, the increasing sophistication of propaganda and mass manipulation techniques, the continuing dominance of rote memorization and recall of facts as modes of learning, the growth of television and the electronic media, the increasing conflict of opposing ideologies in the global village, the acceleration of misunderstanding and stereotype in international politics, the growing desire for simplistic explanation of life with opposing groups being identified as essentially "good" or "evil," the growing threat of nuclear holocaust - all argue for the pressing need for fairminded critical thinking skills.

Our Thanks to Dr. Louise Loomis...

...of ThinkWell Center for sharing pictures of her library, where she tells us an entire section is dedicated to our resources, and where our critical thinking posters are prominently on display. Thank you, Dr. Loomis!

Remember: no matter who you are, if you have critical thinking experiences, success stories, or even just a few images to share, we encourage you to send them to us forthwith! We want to include your thoughts and work in our communications with our members...

Thank you for continuing to be part of this important and rare community.

Please do not pass this message by.

CRITICAL THINKING IS AT RISK.

Here are some of the big reasons why:

  1. Many people believe that critical thinking should be free and that scholars qualified to teach critical thinking should do so for free. Accordingly, they do not think they should have to pay for critical thinking textbooks, courses, or other resources when there is "so much free material online" - despite how erroneous that material may be.
  2. There are many misguided academicians, and some outright charlatans, pushing forth and capitalizing on a pseudo-, partial, or otherwise impoverished concept of critical thinking.
  3. Little to no funding is designated for critical thinking professional development in schools, colleges, or universities, despite the lip service widely given to critical thinking (as is frequently found in mission statements).
  4. Most people, including faculty, think they already know what critical thinking is, despite how few have studied it to any significant degree, and despite how few can articulate a coherent, accurate, and sufficiently deep explanation of it.
  5. People rarely exhibit the necessary level of discipline to study and use critical thinking for reaching higher levels of self-actualization. In part, this is due to wasting intellectual and emotional energy on fruitless electronic entertainment designed to be addictive and profitable rather than educational and uplifting.
  6. On the whole, fairminded critical thinking is neither understood, fostered, nor valued in educational institutions or societies.
  7. People are increasingly able to cluster themselves with others of like mind through alluring internet platforms that enable them to validate one another's thinking - even when their reasoning is nonsensical, lopsided, prejudiced, or even dangerous.
  8. Critical thinking does not yet hold an independent place in academia. Instead, "critical thinking" is continually being "defined" and redefined according to any academic area or instructor that, claiming (frequently unsupported) expertise, steps forward to teach it.

As you see, increasingly powerful trends against the teaching, learning, and practice of critical thinking entail extraordinary challenges to our mission. To continue our work, we must now rely upon your financial support. If critical thinking matters to you, please click here to contribute what you can today.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO CONTINUE OUR WORK.

Thank you for your support of ethical critical thinking.
